Choosing your child’s first childcare place is an important step for both of you. You may be looking for a childminder in Unterhaching, comparing nurseries in Taufkirchen or wondering what “Großtagespflege” means. How do these options differ? And how can you find the right fit for your family?

I’m Hélène, a childminder at the Großtagespflege Fuchsbau in Unterhaching. Here are some pointers to help you get started. The name gives you a starting point, but who cares for your child and what daily life looks like matter just as much.

Tagesmutter or Tagesvater: childcare in a small group

Care provided by a Tagesmutter or Tagesvater is called “Kindertagespflege”. It often takes place in the childminder’s home. Children experience a small, family-like setting with a consistent caregiver.

When you visit, ask about the spaces, the daily routine and the arrangements for illness or holidays. Care hours and practical arrangements should be checked with each provider.

Großtagespflege: several childminders sharing one setting

In a Großtagespflege, several childminders work together in shared premises suited to childcare. Each child remains personally assigned to a particular caregiver. This relationship is a defining feature of this form of care.

Two useful questions to ask are: who will be my child’s main caregiver? And how do the childminders organise their shared daily routine?

Kinderkrippe: care in a nursery

A Kinderkrippe is a childcare centre for children under three, cared for by an early years team. Group sizes, spaces and educational approaches vary between settings.

“Kita” is a broad term used in everyday German for different kinds of childcare centres. When looking for a Kita place, check which age group the setting accepts and what it offers.

Which setting suits your child?

The label alone cannot answer that question. A visit can tell you more than a comparison on paper. Notice how adults speak with children, respond to their cues and provide opportunities to play, move and rest.

You might bring these questions:

  • Who will care for my child each day?
  • How is the settling-in period organised?
  • How are meals, sleep and quiet time supported?
  • How do parents hear about their child’s day?
  • What are the care hours, fees and cover arrangements?

Your childminder Hélène at Fuchsbau

At Fuchsbau, on St.-Alto-Straße 9c in Unterhaching, I care for my own small group of four to five children. I am their consistent caregiver and their parents’ direct point of contact. My colleague cares for her own group. We share the spaces and many everyday experiences.

I completed my qualification in Kindertagespflege in 2023. Each child’s interests and stage of development guide my approach. The rooms, garden and movement room offer opportunities to try things out, play together and explore.

I’m originally from France and support the children in German and, on request, in French too. If you are looking for a childcare place with me, please contact me directly.

For families in Unterhaching and Taufkirchen: the next step

If you live in Taufkirchen, an introductory meeting is an opportunity to discuss whether a place with me at Fuchsbau could be suitable for your family and which conditions apply.

For registration for a Kindertagespflege place, the municipality of Unterhaching directs families to Taufkirchen’s central parent portal. A personal conversation also helps you understand what an individual setting offers.

Would you like to meet me and discover Fuchsbau? Get in touch to ask about current availability and arrange a visit. I look forward to hearing from you.
